Many of the questions answered in this section are to help answer questions asked by people when they have trouble running ASP scripts.

This section also has a few tutorials to help try and answer some of your questions more fully.

ASP Scripts won't run! - most common problem

This seems to be the most common problem that people have.

ASP need's to be run through a web server, hence the name Active Server Pages, no Server, no Active Pages. If you are not familiar with ASP please read through the article on, What is ASP?

If you are finding that you can't get an ASP script to run on your web space provided by your web space provider then check with them that they fully support ASP.

ASP is completely different to CGI and Pearl, so having support for CGI does not mean that you have support on your web space for ASP.

The other biggest problem that seems to occur is if the script uses a database and is not running correctly or not at all. If the script is using a database then please look at the, ASP script uses an Access database and it doesn't work right, FAQ.


How can I tell if my web space supports ASP?

To be able to tell if your web space provider supports ASP, the easiest way is to look at any FAQ or support pages that the provider may have, or contact them by e-mail or phone and ask them.


ASP script uses an Access database and it doesn't work right

If you are trying to write an ASP script yourself and you keep getting errors when you are trying to connect to an Access database then please read through the Access Database Errors page.

If you are using one of the scripts available from Web Wiz Guide and the script is not working right, or not at all then it will more than likely down to the way the server is setup, either the permissions on the server will be incorrect or the wrong ODBC Access Database drivers are installed.

All of Web Wiz Guide's scripts use a DSN-less connection to the database, so if you are not running the server yourself you will need to contact you web host or look at any support or FAQ pages they have, to find out if you can use an Access Database with a DSN-less connection. Also check what version of Access they support.

You may find that your web space provider will need to change the permissions on the server, or that you have to use a special folder that they will or have set up for you with the correct permissions set on it. On the other hand if they haven't a clue what you are on about, or they say 'No way', it's time to find a new web site host!

The page cannot be displayed. HTTP 500 - Internal server error

This is a very general error. If you receive this error when trying to run an ASP script with no error message or line number then you need to turn off Friendly HTTP Error Massages in Internet Explorer so you can get details on what is causing the error.


The Graphical or Session Hit Counter doesn't work correctly

If the ASP script is not running correctly and is either not displaying a counter number or not incrementing the number then check that you have sufficient permissions to allow ASP scripts write as well as execute.


What are session cookies?

Session cookies are almost the same as normal cookies but are deleted from your computer within about 20 minutes of leaving the site or as soon as you close your web browser.

To check that you have cookies and session cookies enabled in IE go to 'Tools'at the top of the screen and select 'Internet Options'. Under the 'Security Settings' you have a button for'Custom Level...' in here you can check to see if you have cookies and session cookies enabled.
